Donna BealesWestern Avenue Studios 424 Donna Beales is a jewelry artist, writer and illustrator at Western Avenue Studios in historic Lowell, Massachusetts. Donna, who is of Anglican & Scots-Irish descent, shares her love of Celtic lore and high fantasy in her unique and original pieces. Many of her designs feature the intricate braid work and scroll patterns of ancient Celtic artwork. She is inspired by many sources, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Museum of Scotland as well as works of high fantasy. She is a professional Librarian and researcher and has spent many hours in libraries studying her craft. Donna specializes in spiritual jewelry and considers her artistic work to be a form of meditative prayer. “I want to create pieces you might find on an archeological dig, or in the dark depths of a dragon’s hoard. When you wear my pieces, I want you to feel like you own something a member of the royal court might have worn from a thousand years ago, but more importantly, I want you to feel that someone made your piece with love and care for you, not that it was cranked off some assembly line by an impoverished worker in Bali.” Donna’s body of work includes several acclaimed video productions, however she is best known for her work in the New York Times best-selling series “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” |

Some of these treasures I scan to help me create my digital collage work. Then, everything gets sorted into boxes for use in my material collage and assemblage. In every collage, I’m trying to tell a story, using transparency and the effects of time to bring that story to life. |

My intense interest in photography that began in high school did not become the avenue for artistic expression that it is today until much later. Since 2007, I have been part of the Western Avenue art community and, since its opening, the Loading Dock Gallery. I create photographs of people. I learned the techniques of black and white darkroom work as a teenager, and have always enjoyed photographing nature and natural still-life scenes, but today I spend most of my time creating images of people, always seeking creativity, imagination and breaking away from what is expected. |

I find furfillment in the simple process of cutting up my own images turning them into something completely different for my collage art. I like to play with my audience, so I try to use these new images in a way that catches the viewer off guard. I enjoy my new collage images so much that I am now adding them into my paintings. To me these are all methods of communication without the spoken word. At times the images we view are expressed feelings and emotions that the artist releases through their work. Currently my primary focus has been the use of photography to capture moments of time of my coexistence within the world which we all live. It is my hope and desire to not just capture a mirrored image but one that captures the essence, spirit and emotion of the subject, an image that speaks beyond what the eye can see. |

Deborah DixonWestern Avenue Studios 402 Earlier this year I was diagnosed having ADD Inattentive. Since then I have been following a regimen of treatment and as a result I feel like a like a flower unfurling it's petals to the sun. Looking back before diagnosis, I felt deep down that I was talented and had a lot to offer if only I could find the missing "piece"- the key to the puzzle. Now I am exploring what I had thought to be dark places of failures, and finding instead gold. For example, my inability to focus for long periods of time necessitated a sharpening of observation that could be translated quickly onto paper. My difficulty with distractions precluded the creation of a large “coherent” body of work, but it did allow me to sample, incorporate, and file away these artistic techniques and references for the future. I found myself exploring life outside my studio through plein air painting, landscapes and cityscapes. Working with watercolor is the perfect medium for me now as it allows for the spontaneity and on the spot instant gratification that I like. For those who appreciate my figurative work, don’t worry, my first love is still here too, they will evolve by becoming “more” and clearer reflection of whom I am as an artist. As mentioned, all of my life I have waited for something or someone to help me find the missing piece of my puzzle, and with the structure and help that I am getting now, I am finding that I am that “puzzle piece” that I waited all the long for. |

Based out of Western Avenue Studios in the red, brick city of Lowell, Massachusetts, his work space is part of the largest collection of working artist on the east coast. +Eyeformation+ is an umbrella for all of his projects, referring to the idea that his work keeps forming and changing for the eye. I dont do just one thing, Frank says. Im into not following boundaries. Im just an artist, and that allows me to do digital one day, and painting the next. Barbara FletcherWestern Avenue Studios 303 I am a sculptor, primarily of soft materials such as fabric and paper. The tactile and meditative nature of fabric/fiber/paper attracted me over 25 years ago. Over time I have experimented with many surface design techniques on fiber such as dying, painting, batiking and photography. I am drawn to figurative and animal themed art. My sculptures reflex the humor I see all around me, particularly in the natural world. A major influence on my art has been that of 16th century Dutch painter, Hieronymus Bosch whose mythical creatures are renowned for their satiric and religious content. In the mid-1980’s after taking a fantasy illustration course at the Rhode Island School of Design my animals began to personify. This metamorphosis culminated in a commission of fantasy sculptures for writer Stephen King. Animals, insects, fish, birds and other creatures combined to make fantastical forms that hung suspended over an indoor pool and on the wall of the hallway leading to the pool area. I called it my creature evolution series. After arriving in Boston in the late 1980’s I began to work with the unusual technique of paper casting. My art was eventually shown in numerous galleries and museums including The DeCordova Museum, The Danforth Museum and a one person show at The Children’s Museum in Boston. I have also been featured in many books on paper art and paper casting. Continued exploration with fiber led me to a technique of spraying many overlapping layers of paper pulp onto a wire surface. In this process I discovered that the texture of the paper is illuminated beautifully as the surface is not opaque and allows light to come through. These works are also sculptural. I am completing a series to be exhibited in the coming year. |

Wilda Gerideau-SquiresWestern Avenue Studios 417 Wilda Gerideau-Squires extreme close-up abstract photography pares the medium down to its most elegant, elemental expression: light on surfaces. By manipulating those surfaces folds of rich fabric, layers of sheer textiles, hard-edged glass forms she creates endlessly inventive and unpredictable images sporting bright colors and exquisite textures. Some resemble vast, magical landscapes with golden sunlight spilling over a mountainous area. Others recall anatomy studies: soft, pleated textures evoke bent and coiled bodies. Gerideau-Squires favors ambiguity, though, so each image remains rooted in abstraction by formal qualities of depth, light, texture and focus. |

Tom GillWestern Avenue Studios 531 Tom has been painting since he was 10 years old. Born in Lowell, MA and raised in Chelmsford, MA, he started his professional career in 1982, after flirting with a rock musician career, and after taking his fine art education with the Art Insitute of Boston. Tom developed his own style using acrylic paint mostly on canvas to express his emotions, using brush strokes that are full of energy. The result is always loose and impressive with harmonious colors that interplay with light.. He teaches this style through entertaining demonstrations throughout New England art associations. Tom's painting style is inspired by John Singer Sargeant, Norman Rockwell, Richard Schmid, and many others. He describes his style as impressionistic realism. He likes to work fast and paints figures in their own environments. He finishes his paintings spontaneously with what he calls, "slap, dashes and dots". |

David LeblancWestern Avenue Studios 305 Artist's Biography David J. Leblanc A wide-eyed fascination with comic books since I was a boy generated a passion for the genre that drives my considerable Abstract Expressionist paintings today. Comic books fueled my early love for art and reading. After struggling for many years with how to integrate this boyhood passion in to my paintings, I stumbled upon a book comprised of Action Comics covers featuring Superman from the 1930’s and 1940’s. The book became the inspiration for my signature Action series combining the elements of Abstract Expressionism and the Pop Art elements of comic books. My arts education took shape at UMass/ Dartmouth where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from 1985-89. However, my desire to create comics evolved into a love for painting. I studied and practiced Abstract Expressionism, Germany Expressionism, and Pop Art during those developing years. The works of Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, but most notably the works of Franz Kline inspired my vision and continue to influence my work. I painted my first notable abstract works in my final year at UMass/Dartmouth. These bold black and white paintings of wide bold brush strokes, drips and splatters pointed me in the direction of Kline and Abstraction Expressionism. After leaving school I worked sporadically for many years and earned a Masters degree in Education. In the summer of 2004, I seized the opportunity to paint a mural at the health club I attended. With the successful completion of the mural of the vineyards of Tuscany, my desire to paint was revived, but I needed a place to work away from home. After making several inquires for studio space, I was made aware of the launching of a new arts community in Lowell at Western Avenue. Soon I became a founding member of the growing Western Avenue Studios community. I maintain a studio there to this day while I prepare my body of work to pursue my career as a working painter. |

Dominique LecomteALL at Appleton Mills I spent my early years in Rambervillers (Vosges, France) a town near Epinal, the City of Images where I later went to study many forms of visual arts in its local art school for a two-year sabbatical. There, I did and exhibited many oils, acrylics and etchings but in 1994, I came to the United States to teach French and philosophy in an international school, and I then specialized in linocuts and woodcuts. Photography, which I always used as a visual travel log, became the base of my work. My private or public buyers live in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United States of America; I have some gallery representation in the United States, but it is not a priority anymore. I was drawn to tactile creations right away starting out with tape and printer paper making 3-D paper robots in my mom's office. I have expanded my repertoire of art materials to an almost limitless variety but especially fiber and textiles. Although most of my artwork is two dimensional with a tactile element, I also stray into creating three-dimensional work. In addition to exhibiting artwork and creating artwork together, my mother and I are partners of Friends Fabric Art, a retail fabric crafts shop and studio started in 2002. In addition, she sees her thrown bowls as offertory in nature with a spiritual connection to the inspiration of pioneering eastern ceramists.In addition, Ms. Levy enjoys exploring Judaica using current and ancient symbols, language, and colors that have become obscured due to the Judaic world's emphasis on the written word. Her Jewish works reflect the joy and solemnity of celebration through form, function and color. Though many of her works are functional, Ms. Levy is more concerned with the ideas expressed by the various forms and the resonant connections to the past, present and future through the unity of form and decoration. All works are made of stoneware, decorated with engobes, and/or underglazes and stains and overglazed and are food, oven, dishwasher,freezer and microwave safe. |

James LongALL at Appleton Mills Being a native from Melrose, Massachusetts, I was fortunate enough to be engrossed by a thriving art community during my pre-college years. In high school, I was graced with the teachings of fine art teachers Paul Squatrito, Kathy Marsh, & Chris Riccardi. Through their teachings, I gained a stronger affinity toward art and continued my artistic journey into college. At the University of New Hampshire, I had the honor of studying under national renown art professors Craig Hood, Jennifer Moses, Grant Drumheller, and Brian Chu. In 2003, I received a B.A. in Fine Art with a focus in oil painting and graduated with high honors, which was an achievement that no art student at the university had done in over 15 years. Since graduating from UNH, I’ve had many art exhibitions and have been solely surviving off of my oil painting since early 2006. I make my living from selling oil paintings at gallery shows, open studios, art festivals, and coffee shops all over the state and also from being hired to do commission work for clients. I am a member of the Melrose Arts and Cultural Association (MACA) and also the Salem Arts Association where I have garnered some great exposure. I have shown on Newbury St. in Boston, the Sowa Artwalk in Boston’s South End, the Charles-Baltivik Gallery in Provincetown, MA and numerous other art venues on the north and south shore. My work can currently be seen at the “Hourglass Art & Gift Gallery” in Melrose, MA, and the “Artist Row” art gallery in Salem, MA, along with select upscale restaurants all across the state. I’m also happy to say that my paintings can be found in various private collections world wide. My work is representational artwork made through flat brush work which I feel incorporates a photo realist quality. The surfaces of my paintings are for the most part smooth with a subtle bit of texture to add additional depth to the painting. I enjoy compositions that present eccentric angles, vivid color combinations, and intense value shifts. I paint with a full palette of color and never use the color black straight out of the tube, but rather make my own black by mixing Prussian Blue and Alizarin Crimson to detract from neutral and less vivid colors. Some of my artistic influences are Edward Hopper, Jan Vermeer, and Salvador Dali to name a few. My body of work encompasses all subject matter including landscapes, still lives, cityscapes, waterscapes, figure studies, sunsets, imaginative art, and more. I like to keep my compositions open ended so I can continue challenging myself and build upon my skills. Keeping the compositions fresh and varied helps me breathe new life into my work in a way which I feel isn’t too stale and overdone. I am available for commission work all the time, whether it’s for a full scale wall mural or a tiny 8x10” painting of a loved one. A few years ago I began showing my work locally, in Lowell and Lawrence. I joined the Arts League of Lowell a few years ago, where I have much enjoyed interaction with fellow artists. I preparing to do a piece, I first scout out locations, I particularly like industrial scenes, including factory buildings, freight yards, bridges and canals. Next, I cut my paper stock to the desired size. I bring it to the location and do a light pencil sketch of the scene. Finally, back in my studio, I complete the drawing in pen and ink. |

Stacey PiwinskiWestern Avenue Studios 205 My work is a combination of handwoven fabric and oil paint. It is about color, texture and surface design. I weave in a contemporary Japanese style called Saori weaving. This free style weaving encourages the artist to work intuitively and expressively. After being classically trained as a painter, I loved the freedom, the rhythm, and the relaxation I found from working with fibers. I weave like a painter and paint like a weaver. The thick, brightly colored oil paints are a variety of mixed colors and each stripe is painted with confidence. They are painted to look deliberately intuitive. I enjoy the process of creating each piece and the fearless elementary school children that I teach inspire me to create my artwork. |

Dan RochaALL at Appleton Mills I use a soft focus method of painting that references photos, increases the depth of field, and suggests some measure of objectivity over the process of painting. The geometric planes also help perceptually to bring the viewer back to the surface, and maintain an overall focus; giving equal bearing to all elements in the piece. The images presented are intentionally ambiguous if they are identifiable at all, shifting emphasis on the intuition of the viewer. The use of saturated color, with a soft focus of composition, holds a mild tension that evokes a meditative quality. All said, the paintings are intended as reflective, contemplative, and emotive objects. Some of the exhibitions in which I have been included are the Berkshire Museum of Art, Whistler House Museum of Art, University of Massachusetts Gallery, The Danforth Museum, and the Pleiades, and Viridian Galleries both in New York. Additionally my work is in various public collections; The Enterprise Bank in Lowell, Fidelity Investments, and New England Life Insurance, both in Boston, MA are a few. Private collections include Germany, The Netherlands, Ireland, and the US. But, glass not only lets in the light, it can also light the space with color. It not only radiates warmth but fills the room with a warm glow, and I can create and manipulate its reflections to dance gracefully across the room. Because of its natural ability to say and convey so many things, I typically allow the glass to speak for itself in most of my art. While primarily self taught through many firings and "trial and error", I did attend formal education including working with world reknown teaching glass artists. tmsStudios is also a Kilnformed Glass Resource Center which teaches a variety of fused glass and kilnformed glass classes while selling Bullseye Glass and tools to students who wish to continue the art at home. |

Though I use many materials, working with wool in particular is delightful! Along with experiencing the inherent tactile pleasures of such a warm medium, I also enjoy interacting with amazing artists who put their love into creating the fibers (carded wools, hand-spun, hand-dyed yarns) I work with. I think their joy is present and compounds with mine as my creations come to life, I would love to pass this joy onto you. |

I left a professional job in public relations to pursue a career painting and teaching art in 2007. I write a regular column for Art New England and teach the history of art at New Hampshire Institute of Art and Chester College of New England. My work follows the long tradition of landscape painters - from the old Dutch and Barbizon masters to American Tonalist and Hudson River School artists - and draws inspiration from everything from plein-air studies and photographed scenes to imaginative literature, mythology, memories, and dreams, all filtered through the influence of the historical landscape tradition. |

As I sift through the conundrums of the day to day tasks and engage with opportunity, pertinent information about my world is revealed to me through my work. Relationships, both past and present, are what fuel my art. My paintings are abstract in nature and communicate the many facets that comprise the web of social and familial structures. Using both oil and encaustic as vehicles for achieving this spiritual illumination, objects are often seen yielding to one another and/or competing for space. Shapes are at times incomplete, interrupted, or overlapping. Color, a formidable key to my art, can also indicate bold intentions versus subdued reactions. All of these elements speak of relationships, journeys, and transformations. As I balance the tightrope between birth and death, I continually adjust my place in this world through my art. I hope, as I bestow this work to viewers that it can be the conduit needed for them to know and feel that they are alive. |

A crinkled up nose or fit of joyous laughter; the slicing of a single telephone wire through vast expanse of sky; the stripping away of extraneous matter to get at the heart of a person or thing - these are what inspire me to paint. My work illuminates the mundane by exaggerating the awkward, calm, or introspective. By reconstructing and preserving an otherwise overlooked or forgotten moment, my painting process becomes an exploration of the personality of that moment; and encourages the viewer to reconsider and reevaluate the ordinary interludes that make everyday life extraordinary. |

Incorporating all of her passions, travel, the oceans, landscapes from around the world, animals, nature, people, and a love for life itself, she is realizing a dream. There is nothing she enjoys more than to be an active participant in the joining of two people into a new life together, consequently her attraction for specializing in wedding photography. Freelance work has taken her as far as The United Kingdom. In her studio she does portrait photography; headshots, senior portraits, pets and children, but much more prefers natural light and the beach or any outdoor setting as the backdrop. Her services also include Bar Mitzvahs, First Communions, and family or social events. She paints in oil, and can be heard saying things like "I love rocks!" after painting a craggy coastal shore. Eleni ZohdiNot on List 41 Bridge st. Eleni, born in Amfia, Kalamata, Greece, was educated at the Athens School of Fashion and Design where was nominated for numerous awards for academic achievement as well as haute couture. As a student, she was chosen to assist in the design and creation of a complete wardrobe for Queen Anna Maria of Greece one of the highest awards afforded at the Academy. Upon completion of her studies in 1968, Eleni accompanied her parents to the United States where she continued her career in the fashion industry. In 1984 she was selected a Rising Young Star Designer and invited by the Fashion Group of Boston to show five of her exclusive creations before the most prestigious designers of the United States and Europe. Elenis passion for fashion and art has led her into teaching young people at Girls Inc., Greater Lowell Technical High School, the Lowell Middlesex Charter School Academy and Bay State College in Boston. She has actively contributed to local theater costume and stage design.
