I began my artist career as an abstract painter in the fall of 2008.  In 2009, I decided I wanted to make a quilt.  So I went to Walmart, bought a sewing machine, and then asked my neighbor to show me how to thread it since I really had no idea how to sew.  I now have four sewing machines and sew every day!  I love to paint and sew and the two art forms often compliment each other.  My work is all about pattern and color.  While trying to narrow my focus, I've noticed that it just becomes wider, and I am just going with it. Making art is my life and it's not really a choice but something that I'm compelled to do.  I love it though, and that is what's most important.

My work is inspired by color, by the fact that forms are not static forever, by the fact that lines and boarders often merge and blend into each other.  The dye in tissue paper lends my work entensiy of color.  Water facilitates the movement of colors and lines, it helps create new colors, new shades and hues.  The tissue collage, because one sheet or piece of tissue in layered on another, has texture.  The viewer is drawn closer to the work, often wants to touch it, to run fingers over its surface.

Long ago and far away, in a stuffy Austin High School art room in Houston, a classmate spilled water on one of my ink paintings and on some tissue paper on my table.  Mrs. Tuly was alarmed.  I was pleasantly surprised.  My method emerged from that "accident"!

I was born creative. Bright colors and bold ideas are hallmarks of my work as an artist, designer and builder. Nothing is off-limits and I move fluidly between mixed media, sculpture, encaustic, pottery, and interior design. I thrive on transforming empty spaces and combining the overlooked with the unexpected. Using paint and power tools, I rescue, revitalize, and reinterpret objects. Creating something from nothing is the essence of my work. I see the potential in everyday items and scavenged materials are treasures, like an alchemist, I alter anything that might catch my eye into something entirely new. My work envelopes the viewer in possibilities. My deepest inspiration comes from being challenged by a problem that needs solving. I love responding to a particular situation and moving it from a negative to a positive. I rely on my desire for beauty, and my pleasure of aesthetic. I’ve crafted the perfect life for myself, of art all day.

I have always been truly fond of that which is old, weathered, rusted or distressed. I search endlessly for old handwritten letters, paper, tickets, photographs, hotel bills, rusted metal, and aged or distressed wood.

Some of these treasures I scan to help me create my digital collage work. Then, everything gets sorted into boxes for use in my material collage and assemblage. In every collage, I'm trying to tell a story, using transparency and the effects of time to bring that story to life.

Fabric, Quilting

Fabric is such an inescapable part of our everyday lives; I have always been amazed at how many ways it could transform into objects of importance.  A self-taught quilter, I have never felt bound by rules, developing my own style of hand-guided machine quilting. Working in conjunction with other quilters, I feel gifted to play a role in the creative growth of a quilt in progress. Combining two minds—the quilter and the piecer—we are able to bring the work up to its fullest potential. In the same regard, my own artistic growth has been deeply influenced by a vast quilting community.  I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned thru classes using my own patterns, and have been fortunate to lend my skills to manage and participate in community outreach projects.  In all my time as a quilter, I have found no greater satisfaction than the knowledge that my creation has become an integral part of someone’s life experience.

While I enjoy quilting in a traditional sense, I also love making creative and beautiful items one can truly live with.  Quilts, bags, accessories and much more.  Other media often find their way into my work, too. There are no boundaries!

Please drop by and see how much quilting has to offer.  Just listen down the hall for laughter or singing to guide you; I look forward to meeting you!

I grew up in Exeter, New Hampshire, and studied music at Berklee College of Music, pursuing a music career and then an engineering career. My intense interest in photography that began in high school did not become the avenue for artistic expression that it is today until much later. Since 2007, I have been part of the Western Avenue art community. I create photographs of people. I learned the techniques of black and white darkroom work as a teenager, and have always enjoyed photographing nature and natural still-life scenes, but today I spend most of my time creating images of people, always seeking creativity, imagination and breaking away from what is expected.

Acrylic, collage, mixed media

Now combining the two worlds of painting and collage, I now consider myself to be a mixed media artist, not just a painter.  By using my own collage images in my paintings, it has allowed my art to develop in a way that has been an unexpected, but an enjoyable journey.  By combining the two mediums, it has allowed me to be more playful with my audience.  I want them to explore deeper into each piece.  With different levels of hidden worlds and subliminal images, each viewer will have thier own unique experience.  Each will discover something the other missed, making for a more active experience for the viewer.

I have always had an interest in visual images whether they be photos, paintings, sculptures, or a scrawl created in the wet sand at the beach. To me these are all methods of communication without the spoken word. At times the images we view are the expressed feelings and emotions that an artist releases through their work. Currently my primary focus has been the use of photography to capture moments of time of my coexistence within the world which we all live. It is my hope and desire to not just capture a mirrored image but one that captures the essence, spirit and emotion of the subject, an image that speaks beyond what the eye can see.

"In my collage and mixed media work I strive to create a richly textured surface using primarily found papers, fabrics, rust, string, paint, pastel, raw pigments, wax and drawing. Some of the work is entirely abstract collage. Other pieces are based on more realistic subjects such as the figure, nature, still life, and most recently, bones. These pieces vary in degree of realism and abstraction. In all of my work I am continuously exploring the interplay of materials, texture, color and composition."

Western Avenue Studios 303, Map# 1

http://www.paperdimensions.com mixed media

I am a sculptor, primarily of soft materials such as fabric and paper. The tactile and meditative nature of fabric/fiber/paper attracted me over 25 years ago. Over time I have experimented with many surface design techniques on fiber such as dying, painting, batiking and photography. I am drawn to figurative and animal themed art. My sculptures reflex the humor I see all around me, particularly in the natural world. A major influence on my art has been that of 16th century Dutch painter, Hieronymus Bosch whose mythical creatures are renowned for their satiric and religious content. In the mid-1980's after taking a fantasy illustration course at the Rhode Island School of Design my animals began to personify. This metamorphosis culminated in a commission of fantasy sculptures for writer Stephen King. Animals, insects, fish, birds and other creatures combined to make fantastical forms that hung suspended over an indoor pool and on the wall of the hallway leading to the pool area. I called it my creature evolution series. After arriving in Boston in the late 1980's I began to work with the unusual technique of paper casting. My art was eventually shown in numerous galleries and museums including The DeCordova Museum, The Danforth Museum and a one person show at The Children's Museum in Boston. I have also been featured in many books on paper art and paper casting. Continued exploration with fiber led me to a technique of spraying many overlapping layers of paper pulp onto a wire surface. In this process I discovered that the texture of the paper is illuminated beautifully as the surface is not opaque and allows light to come through. These works are also sculptural. I am completing a series to be exhibited in the coming year.

Tom developed his own style using acrylic paint mostly on canvas to express his emotions, using brush strokes that are full of energy. The result is always loose and impressive with harmonious colors that interplay with light.. He teaches this style through entertaining demonstrations throughout New England art associations. Tom's painting style is inspired by John Singer Sargeant, Norman Rockwell, Richard Schmid, and many others. He describes his style as impressionistic realism. He likes to work fast and paints figures in their own environments. He finishes his paintings spontaneously with what he calls, "slap, dashes and dots".

I began painting in my mid-twenties by taking a few beginning oil paintings and soon began to discover a new richness for experiencing the world. I strive to develop my technique in order to express my take on what I paint. Over the years I have received much positive feedback including several prizes in local art shows. Since 2006, I have studio space in Lowell, Massachusetts where I mix painting with family and work life.

Quilts, small fabric items.
I learned to sew, knit and do different crafts at an early age and have always loved buying fabric anywhere I go. As a fabric junkie I started to make quilts twenty years ago and spend time at the New England Quilt Museum as a member and volunter. Being in the WAS environment inspires me to create and learn from the many mediums represented in the studios. I was one of the first members of Western Avenue Studios and it is still my favorate place to be.

Sus Iserbyt

Acrylic paintings
Born in Kortrijk, Belgium and came to the US in 2002. Sus comes from an artistic family. Painting has been running in Sus's family on both sides for several generations. She took classes in watercolor with Marc Speybroeck a well known local artist. In the US she started taking painting classes at the Decordova Museum in Concord, MA for three years and a class in Chinese brush painting at the MFA in Boston. Her first series of paintings were children at play, using photo's that captures their movement, especially when they are unaware of it. In these type of pictures children act in their most natural way. The combination of a background that is painted with the pallet knife in a more abstract way with a much more realistic portrait of the child gives the painting a style of her own. In the second, current series , Sus takes the technique of the background to the whole painting . Lines , light and shadow are making the paintings more abstract and very emotional. The inspiration came from her divers travels to city's in Europe and the US. Where a visit to the major museums is always on her list. "Seeing art and favorite pieces over and over gives you inspiration and the drive to work and try different things." As a very recent member of Western Avenue Studio’s, Sus was attracted by the diversity and quality of the artists and simply the “vibe” of the community feel. The interaction with fellow artists and visitors not only helps her be more productive, but also brings a whole new perspective e.g. regarding subjects and technique.

Printer On Prescott: History & Mission

History:
Jim Jeffers, Stephen Mishol, and Denise Manseau established Printer on Prescott in November of 2009 as a space for contemporary arts research.  The 4000 square-foot space is located in the old storefront at 82 Prescott Street in the heart of downtown Lowell, MA—formerly Patriot Printers, the word PRINTER is still affixed in large metal letters to the building, hence the name. This prime location is just blocks from Lowell’s National Park Visitors Center, several historic and cultural museums, restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops and is adjacent Middlesex Community College and directly behind the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center. Jeffers and Mishol are both professors at UMass Lowell, and Manseau is an UMass Lowell alumna.

Mission:
Our mission as The Arts Research Collaborative @ Printer on Prescott is to be contemporary artists working in downtown Lowell, interfacing the Lowell arts community, the University of Massachusetts Lowell arts community and a practice focused on arts dialogues beyond the region, state, and nation.

I was born and grew up near Frankfurt/M.,Germany and I moved to the United States in 1997. I have loved to paint with different medias since childhood. Formal instructions I got from school and from my aunt , who is a known artist in Germany. A lot of inspiration I get from european artists like Hundertwasser and Klimt, and everything around me. Although I begin my canvas with very little ideas the architecture of Europe is influencing my artwork. I am mainly self taught by trying out a lot of different media and styles. I paint abstract landscapes ,colorful animals or what I feel.I am a intuitive and spontaneous artist. I don't tell the material what to do , the material speaks to me. As an energy and body worker positive attitude, love energy and hopeful thoughts are mirroring my artwork. Painting makes me happy and my goal is to share the happiness with people.

About ten years ago, I made a trip up to Harrisville, NH and bought my first floor-loom (as a kit), built it over the course of a rare weekend off, taught myself to weave, and have been hooked ever since. I've been selling my wearables since 2006, am a Board Member of the Weavers Guild of Boston, and have recently expanded into leading seminars and classes for various New England-area weaving guilds. I work with a variety of fibers, but mostly love to create movement and use color to highlight that movement in my wearable pieces. If you'd like to see a traditional (or a more modern compu-dobby) handloom in action, stop by my studio at WAS!

Since I have no home in the traditional sense, I create one through my paintings.  My palette choices relate to my sensory experiences and are intuitive investigations of color worlds.  Line and texture unify the individual pieces.  Through multiple layers I build a history.  The scale and vertical orientation is linked to the figure as an extension of the autobiographical nature of the work.  Often I paint very thin, semi-transparent layers of oil over some form of metallic surface, such as gold leaf or other precious metals.

Besides the rich reflective properties of metallic leaf, I use it because precious metals shaped my life. My father moved my family and I around the world every two years as an exploration geologist for the world’s largest gold mining company. My artwork expresses the many different cultural influences I have experienced and helps explore my identity. In casual conversation, I find the simple question, “Where do you come from?” problematic. In short, I come from many places and my work reflects the multiplicity of place, time, and memory

David Leblanc

http://www.actionabstractionstudio.com acrylic enamel and collage on canvas

Artist's Biography David J. Leblanc A wide-eyed fascination with comic books since I was a boy generated a passion for the genre that drives my considerable Abstract Expressionist paintings today. Comic books fueled my early love for art and reading. After struggling for many years with how to integrate this boyhood passion in to my paintings, I stumbled upon a book comprised of Action Comics covers featuring Superman from the 1930’s and 1940’s. The book became the inspiration for my signature Action series combining the elements of Abstract Expressionism and the Pop Art elements of comic books. My arts education took shape at UMass/ Dartmouth where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from 1985-89. However, my desire to create comics evolved into a love for painting. I studied and practiced Abstract Expressionism, Germany Expressionism, and Pop Art during those developing years. The works of Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, but most notably the works of Franz Kline inspired my vision and continue to influence my work. I painted my first notable abstract works in my final year at UMass/Dartmouth. These bold black and white paintings of wide bold brush strokes, drips and splatters pointed me in the direction of Kline and Abstraction Expressionism. After leaving school I worked sporadically for many years and earned a Masters degree in Education. In the summer of 2004, I seized the opportunity to paint a mural at the health club I attended. With the successful completion of the mural of the vineyards of Tuscany, my desire to paint was revived, but I needed a place to work away from home. After making several inquires for studio space, I was made aware of the launching of a new arts community in Lowell at Western Avenue. Soon I became a founding member of the growing Western Avenue Studios community. I maintain a studio there to this day while I prepare my body of work to pursue my career as a working painter.

I spent my early years in Rambervillers (Vosges, France) a town near Epinal, the City of Images where I later went to study many forms of visual arts in its local art school for a two-year sabbatical. There, I did and exhibited many oils, acrylics and etchings but in 1994, I came to the United States to teach French and philosophy in an international school, and I then specialized in linocuts and woodcuts. Photography, which I always used as a visual travel log, became the base of my work. My private or public buyers live in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United States of America; I have some gallery representation in the United States, but it is not a priority anymore. Besides art and philosophy, I like reading, writing, traveling, hiking, swimming, snow shoeing, and kayaking

Love of fabrics is the driving force in Ann Lee's art--the tactile qualities of the fabric, the colors that change when the light or the fabric next to it changes, and the real and implied textures that add depth to creations. She sees her task as an artist as bringing together pieces of very disparate fabrics each with its own color, pattern and texture to make them work together as a whole composition. Lately she has been concentrating on creating one-of-a-kind art-to-wear jackets. Drop by her studio, The Loading Dock Gallery or Dahlia (in Newton Centre)to see her latest creations.

I have been drawing and making stuff with whatever supplies I could find ever since I was little. I was drawn to tactile creations right away starting out with tape and printer paper making 3-D paper robots in my mom's office. I have expanded my repertoire of art materials to an almost limitless variety but especially fiber and textiles. Although most of my artwork is two dimensional with a tactile element, I also stray into creating three-dimensional work. In addition to exhibiting artwork and creating artwork together, my mother and I are partners of Friends Fabric Art, a retail fabric crafts shop and studio started in 2002. Through workshops at Friends Fabric Art I have been able to share my art techniques and materials experience with others. In addition to teaching workshops and exhibiting my work, I have had photographs of my creations in several arts & crafts publications.

Adult classes and other studio information is available at www.ancientechosarts.com.Levy is an active member of The Arts League of Lowell where she has both curated 3 bi-annual shows: EARTHLY CONNECTIONS and has shown regularly in judged and open exhibitions. She also participates in art fairs throughout Massachusetts including the Lowell Folk Festival ART IN THE COURTYARD, DeCordava's ART IN THE PARK and Beverly's ARTFEST. After over 25 years of exploration and experimentation, ceramist Sharon Levy has produced a variety of works using ancient methods, materials and techniques. She uses these methods and materials in contemporary ways to interpret the ancient, modern, and natural world around her. Her works reflect the physical environment by way of the natural edged landscapes found in her boxes; hand-built vessels that connect to the the ancient world utilizing the potter's wheel, coils, altering, carving and applied work. The modern world and natural environment are also expressed in the functional ware that includes bowls that reflect the uneven edges found in earthly horizons and watery undulations. In addition, she sees her thrown bowls as offertory in nature with a spiritual connection to the inspiration of pioneering eastern ceramists. Ms. Levy enjoys exploring Judaica using current and ancient symbols, language, and colors that have become obscured due to the Judaic world's emphasis on the written word. Her Jewish works reflect the joy and solemnity of celebration through form, function and color. Though many of her works are functional, Ms. Levy is more concerned with the ideas expressed by the various forms and the resonant connections to the past, present and future through the unity of form and decoration. All works are made of stoneware, decorated with engobes, and/or underglazes and stains and overglazed and are food, oven, dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe.

Alyshia Lien, aka ALIEN, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts (1976). As a young girl she enjoyed exploring nature and all its wonders, which proved to be the beginnings of her creative process. Growing up in New England she discovered her passion for the arts. An aspiring artist and an avid ballet and modern dancer since the age of eight, she attended college at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA (1995) as a fine art major and dance minor. During college, her passion for dance was under bellied by her visual art explorations. Alyshia further advanced her fine art techniques during her studies at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA (1997). Feeling more confident in her artistic abilities, she was both inspired and disenchanted by the city. When her love-hate relationship of the city began to take its toll, she moved back home to complete her BFA at University of Massachusetts Lowell (2003). ALIEN was the Artist-In-Residence at the William Steeple Davis House in NY (2006-2007). During her residency, she spent many days beach combing for sculpture materials and arranging the found objects in her studio for potential assemblage configurations. Sometimes it would take months before a sculpture was completed, while searching for that perfect found object. Collecting objects in the studio and living with them on a daily basis allowed her to become acquainted with the found materials. Alyshia discovered her preferred method of painting during her stay at the Davis House. She would embrace the canvas with water-based media as an under painting. Then she would apply oil sticks, pastels, and oil paints over that to achieve a layered effect. In addition to finding her painting and sculpture processes, she re-discovered her love of writing poetry. Alyshia continues to incorporate her poetry in her art making process. The joys and hardships of solitude and isolation proved to be an unprecedented journey of self-exploration. She was able to discover how her creative process unfolds in space and time. Currently living in the Lowell area, she continues to experiment with mixed media paintings and sculptures. With a newfound affinity to video and improv dance, she has performed and collaborated with various artists at local events, fundraisers, and benefits. Alyshia has shown her work at local galleries and coffee shops. She is diligently working on a large body of work in her studio. In addition, ALIEN is always brewing spontaneous performance and installation ideas in the background of her mind and configuring the juxtaposition of a multi-media conglomeration of all the wonders of the world, or at least of her many artistic endeavors. ALIEN is coming to a gallery near you.

J.J. Long

http://www.jjartworks.com Oil Painting
James Creighton Long Jr. is a native of Melrose, Massachusetts where he was fortunate enough to be engrossed by a thriving art community during his pre-college years. In high school, he was graced with the teachings of fine art teachers Paul Squatrito, Kathy Marsh, & Chris Riccardi. Through their teachings, Long gained a stronger affinity toward art and continued his artistic journey into college. At the University of New Hampshire, Long had the honor of studying under national renown art professors Craig Hood, Jennifer Moses, Grant Drumheller, and Brian Chu. In 2003, Long received a B.A. in Studio Art with a focus in oil painting and graduated with high honors as part of the “University Honors in The Arts” Program. After graduating from UNH, Long has had a very fruitful art career and has been surviving solely off of his oil painting since late 2005. He makes his living from selling his oil paintings at gallery shows, open studios, art festivals, and coffee shops all over New England and also from being hired to do commission work for clients. Murals of his work can be viewed at the “West End Museum” in Boston, MA , “Johnnie’s On The Side Restaurant” located on Portland St. in Boston just walking distance of the TD Banknorth Garden, and in numerous private homes state wide. Long is a member of the Melrose Arts and Cultural Association (MACA), the Salem Arts Association, the Arts League of Lowell (ALL), and the Western Avenue Studio Artist Association (WASAA). His work can also currently be seen at the “Hourglass Art & Gift Gallery” in Melrose, MA, the “Artist Row” art gallery in Salem, MA, the “Canterbury Hill Gallery” in Jackson, NH, “General Goods” gift shop in North Andover, MA, and the ”Kiskadee Cafe“ in Plymouth, MA. Long’s style is realism made through flat brush work and thin layers of paint that sometimes resemble that of watercolors. The surfaces of his paintings are for the most part smooth with a subtle bit of texture to add additional depth to the painting. He enjoys compositions that present eccentric angles, vivid color combinations, and intense value shifts. Long paints with a full palette of color and never uses the color black straight out of the tube, but rather makes his own black by mixing Prussian Blue and Alizarin Crimson to detract from neutral and less vivid colors. Some of his influences are Edward Hopper, Carravagio, and Salvador Dali to name a few. His body of work encompasses all subject matter including landscapes, still lives, cityscapes, waterscapes, figure studies, sunsets, imaginative art, and more. Long likes to keep his compositions open ended, so he can continue challenging himself and build upon his skills. Keeping the compositions fresh and varied helps the artist breathe new life into his work in a way that isn’t stale and overdone. Long tends to create paintings from photos he composes in the field or from doing “plein air” paintings in nature himself. J.J. Long’s work can be viewed in person at his studio location in studio #518 at 122 Western Ave in Lowell, MA. You can view his portfolio online at his official website at www.jjartworks.com, his Myspace page at www.myspace.com/jjartworksbiz, and his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jjartworksbiz. After a career as a Decorative Painting teacher, Carol put away her brushes to follow her family’s busy schedule. Then, she discovered “Trompe L’oeil”! Trompe-l’œil, is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions. She started her quest at the Decorating Masters school in Georgia. Then traveled to Maryland, back to Georgia.. anywhere it was being taught. She studied at The Kendall School for the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design and Monserrat. Her passion and love of learning new techniques have partnered her with some of the best teachers in the country. “ Trompe L’oeil has given me a sense of power. I can give my clients a permanent memory in their homes. A doorway to Aruba.. a loft overlooking Beacon Hill.. a Tuscany landscape... a window on Provence.. a garden with perpetual flowers.. a childhood memory.. a window on Ireland... all these can be brought to life with a stroke of a brush. Sometimes, I feel it’s almost magical... and I get to wield the ‘magic wand’! Her furniture ranges from a life-like pizza table to a breath- taking seaside view bureau. If you imagine it... she can paint it.... with her ‘magic wand’.

I have loved glass for as long as I remember. The beauty and multi-faceted colors are ever changing. I have enjoyed the medium for years and love experimenting with different elements in my work. As day turns to night another facet of stained glass comes to light. The mystique of glass is ever changing with no two pieces of glass being the same. Nature inspires my work. I often work agates into a piece to add another natural element as well as symbolizing the eternity of life. Working other natural elements into stained glass adds interest and identity to each panel. I also enjoy working with warm glass. The Dichroic glass I use in my jewelry and boxes bring layers of beauty and color you can enjoy for years.

It is most notable for Owen's use of saturated color, heavy texture, thick brush strokes and psychedelic qualities, as well as layering and recycling of images. Owen is known for her dexterity with using a wide range of media including but not limited to painting and drawing mediums, found objects, photography, and digital artistic programs. She has worked under artists such as Alison Williams, Peter Clive, Marcus Greene, David Wells, and Soo Rye Yoo. Her work is becoming increasingly popular and has been featured in galleries across New England such as The Steez Gallery, The Map Gallery, and Soo Rye Art Gallery. She has participated in numerous art events and shows, her most recent being at the Annual Student Exhibition at NHIA, featuring her senior body of work. She has several other shows and art events planned in the near feature, including Taking Flight, which is a show featuring emerging New England artists.

Born 1976

BFA School of the Art Institute of Chicago – 2000

Growing up as a foreigner in Europe I became acutely aware of the difference between how I saw myself and how others defined me. Preconceived notions of Americans typically had more influence on how I was perceived than my own actions. These often contrary viewpoints were a striking introduction to the subjective nature of perception. My work explores the inherent conflict between simple objects or scenes and the complex perception that personal experience brings to a subject.

I bring my own perception of the subject to my work through the use of highly representative and heavily abstracted elements. At first glance, the literal elements of the paintings are most significant. Upon further reflection, the role of the abstract components in providing context for those literal elements becomes clear. The expressive nature of the abstract exists in the contrast to the representative facets of my work. The act of resolving this tension between the literal and abstract is a symbolic exploration of the relationship between the subjective and objective aspects of perception. My paintings are the visual record of the complex internal dialogue that exists throughout this process. The subject matter, my knowledge of art history, materials, technique, methodology, and my own narrative are all equivalent counterparts in this discourse.

The nature of perception is further reflected throughout my creative process. Exhaustive photography of the subject allows for the creating of a collective perspective. While my internal dialogue develops the highly flexible nature of oil paint allows me to keep the work vital. And while at times I still seek the give of canvas or the precision of a uniform surface like archival panel, I find that linen most often provides a consistency as well as liveliness upon which to watch the finished work unfold.

Pen & Ink

After graduating from Massachusetts College of Art, I initially focused on sculpture, but ultimately pen and ink has become my medium of choice. A few years ago I began showing my work locally, in Lowell and Lawrence. I joined the Arts League of Lowell a few years ago, where I have much enjoyed interaction with fellow artists. I preparing to do a piece, I first scout out locations, I particularly like industrial scenes, including factory buildings, freight yards, bridges and canals. Next, I cut my paper stock to the desired size. I bring it to the location and do a light pencil sketch of the scene. Finally, back in my studio, I complete the drawing in pen and ink.

Become a fan of Art Turtle Studio on Facebook! Handwoven Fabrics and Oil Paintings.
My work is made from a combination of handwoven fabric and oil paint. I weave in a contemporary Japanese style called Saori weaving which encourages the artist to work freely and expressively. I use a variety of materials in my weavings such hand dyed yarns, the small scraps of fabric from quiltmakers, shreds of worn clothing, and pieces of my own woven fabric. Combining the chosen fibers with the rich colors of the thick oil paint creates the textured surfaces of these abstract pieces. I try to weave like a painter and paint like a weaver and I enjoy every bit of the process while working in my studio at The Western Avenue Studios in Lowell.

I have been a graphic designer for print, Web and digital media for over 12 years. I am sole-proprietor of a graphic/Web design business, the primary focus of which is to produce print and digital media for small businesses, artists and craftspeople.

In addition to my work as a graphic artist, I continue to pursue my love for textiles and fiber arts. The sculptural basket forms you will see in my open studio are selected from a production crafts line I continue to actively develop, produce and exhibit. The innovative technique used to produce my work is a direct outcome of my MFA thesis work. A four-harness loom is an essential tool in the process for weaving flat "fabric", which is then hand-woven, shaped and constructed to create three dimensional vessel forms. Currently, I am in a new product development stage—exploring the use of this same technique for developing sculptural lighting forms and combining graphics with collage and recycled fiber elements.

I am new to the Lowell artist’s community, moving here from Worcester, MA where I was a graphic designer for Clark University. I have a BFA in crafts from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA in Weaving and Textile Design from Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen. I am certified in computer graphic design for both Web and print media.

I love the way glass lets in the light, radiates warmth and dances with reflections. But, glass not only lets in the light, it can also light the space with color. It not only radiates warmth but fills the room with a warm glow, and I can create and manipulate its reflections to dance gracefully across the room. Because of its natural ability to say and convey so many things, I typically allow the glass to speak for itself in most of my art. While primarily self taught through many firings and "trial and error", I did attend formal education including working with world reknown teaching glass artists. tmsStudios is also a Preferred Bullseye Partner and Kilnformed Glass Resource Center which teaches a variety of fused glass and kilnformed glass classes while selling Bullseye Glass and tools to students who wish to continue the art at home.

I believe that each individual has an innate need to share their inner soul in some way - and it shows up through music, writing, and through various art mediums. I have a passion for drawing, painting, and photography that has developed over the past 40 years. Expressing myself through my art is not only an enjoyable and therapeutic pastime but it is also a deep desire to create something. Through the eye of the camera, I try to capture “the moment” and bring the beauty of the world around me up close and personal – one photo at a time. You can look at the same subject through so many different angles and see something amazingly different each time. Many of the photos I take become the subject of my paintings. I like to paint realistic scenes that draw you in and make you want to stay there awhile.

www.artofthetangle.com Fiber Arts, Handwovens, Zentangle Drawing

I have had a lifelong love affair with fiber and color, especially expressed through handweaving, hand dying yarn, and freeform knitting and crochet.

More recently, I have been completely hooked on abstract drawing methods of Zentangle.

I sell handwoven items and handpainted yarns in my studio, as well as Zentangle inspired drawings and supplies.

However, my true love is teaching, and supplying fiber artists and Zentangle artists with beautiful yarns and materials to work with.

I believe that every human being has the ability to create beautiful artwork. I also believe that most people have an innate desire to express themselves creatively. However, as we grow into adulthood, our artistic instincts are often squashed because we find that we don't measure up to various "standards".

  • Our teachers told us we don't color in the lines.
  • Our lines aren't straight.
  • Our drawings don't look like anything.
  • Our knitting isn't even.
  • We can't follow patterns.

Well, all of these things might be true, but they don't mean we can't create beautiful works of art.

My greatest pleasure is to see the moment when students look at their abstract works, which don't look like anything, and may have no straight lines, and say "Wow! I did this! And I love it!". Or maybe they combine colors and textures in patterns of their own design to create truly unique knitted or crocheted pieces.

I believe that if people are given the "tools" and "ingredients" (whether it be Zentangle patterns, beautiful yarns, a palette of colors), and a positive experience, that they will have the confidence to go forward and develop their own artistic instincts.

Artist Statement For me, painting is about color, motion, and emotion and their expression as form on canvas. My palette and subject matter reflect the joy, and sometimes the humor, I find in the world of my imagination and in everyday life My colors are bold; my subjects ask the viewer to engage in what they are thinking and feeling. Certain images have become part of my paint language, creatures, dreamers and their dreamscapes, landscapes, moons, and trees, and dogs. I am delighted that my work has been described by the local media as "edgy, fun, and fancifully colored".

Kellie Weeks received her B.F.A from Bradford College in 2001. After years of exploring many media she is now focused on painting with pigment sticks and encaustic, which is an ancient medium that is comprised of beeswax, resin, and dry pigments. Kellie incorporates dry pigments, metal leaf, shellac, graphite, and other mixed media as vehicles to develop a whole lexicon of imagery. Kellie is an abstract painter. Often in her work, basic fields of color, shapes, and objects are seen yielding to one another or competing for space. These dynamic compositions tend to describe simple relationships which reveal pertinent information about mankind and what it means to be a living being in this world, all the while, trying to illuminate the human spirit and the journey it is on. Kellie’s work has been exhibited nationally in many juried and group shows, and is included in many private and public collections. Additionally, she has worked on many commissioned pieces, the most memorable being a portrait which was left up to Kellie’s own abstract interpretation! She works diligently, day to day in the studio, searching for what Mark Rothko calls the “anecdote of the spirit”.

1991 was the year I took a job at a production glass studio in Centralia, WA. I was a music student at the local college and worked part-time to make rent and pay bills. My introduction to glass could hardly be more humble. My job description included finish work on all production, packing and shipping wholesale orders, hot shop cleaning and maintenance. I became a full team member and worked hard as an apprentice during my first six years. 1997 gave me the opportunity to work as a production glassblower on the island of Bermuda. I not only had the chance to learn glass skills that I would never have been exposed to any where else, I lived in a rare and beautiful country. I was influenced by Bermuda’s spirit and environment while I practiced with great devotion the traditional Venetian techniques, both solid and blown. 2007 was my opportunity to leave the island life and come back to the United States. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I thought of living and working here on the East Coast to be a new and welcome challenge. I found my studio in Lowell, MA at Western Avenue Studios and it has been everything I wanted and more. I feel part of the revitalization that is possible with a strong and nurturing creative economy. I get to be a working artist surrounded by peers working in a variety of medium. New designs and new ways to connect are helping me reach my goal of touching an audience with my work and joy.
